Should the FDA regulate natural supplements and herbal remedies? My answer is absolutely not. I know the spirit and intent of the FDA is supposedly to protect people, however I believe that people often seek natural and herbal remedies to escape using a drug that the FDA has approved. The bottom-line is that even an endorsement from the FDA is not a guarantee that a substance is safe.
I suffered from Gout for several years. During those years I took FDA approved medications to treat this agonizing disease. Unfortunately for me, all the medications that could be used to treat my ailment had serious if not fatal side effects. I was essentially swapping relief from the Gout for the risk of side effects from the medications. Where is the logic in trading off relief from one condition only to subject yourself to other problems?
I was able to use a natural product to effectively eliminate my Gout. Had this supplement been regulated by the FDA as a drug, then it is likely that I would not have had the freedom of choice in deciding to try the product. This freedom is something that I want to expand on. Most adults will be able to research their alternatives to deal with or treat disease. As we all know there are numerous sources of information all around us. I really don't feel that I need the FDA to make decisions for me. Remember, the medications available to me were already approved by the FDA, side effects and all.
I don't see where the FDA could do anything to increase the safety of natural supplements or herbal remedies because they have yet to safely regulate the existing pharmaceutical industry. I don't recall the exact numbers, but I believe something like well over 100,000 people die yearly from drug related complications. That is a lot of people dying, and they are dying from drugs that are under the regulatory umbrella of the FDA.
In my case I was seeking alternatives to drugs that were potentially harmful to me. I found a solution via a natural supplement, and I am well pleased with the results. With that being said, just remember that there may be alternatives out there that will work for others. My advice is to do your research and make informed decisions based on that research.
