The basics of nursing procedures are wide and variable. A nurse can pick a specialty: Work in a physician's office; staff nurse at a hospital in a medical, surgical, pediatric, geriatric, etc. ward; flight nurse; traveling nurse, etc. There are many options, and the field needs new recruits.
Many nurses choose special care units, such as cardiac care, neurological care, or possibly trauma in the emergency room.
The basics of nursing procedures are dealing with people with a wide variety of illnesses in just as wide a variety of settings. You can do something as simple as removing stitches to working the maddening environment of a cardiac or respiratory emergency. Most importantly is knowing your patient, and watching them...accessing their every need; from dietary to human excretions.
You must also be adept at medical terminology. This is essential in order to communicate intelligently with the patients primary care-giver, as well as charting your observations and explaining procedures and other questions a patient might have.
Nurses are people caring for people; whether they are terminally ill or have a splinter in their hand. Hold out your hand for theirs.
