Risk factors for hyperthyroidism are things that make it more likely you could get it. You can get hyperthyroidism with no risk factors present, however. If you have several of these risk factors, you should talk to your doctor or other health care professional about ways you can reduce your risks for this condition.
You may be at risk if:
You have some viral infections
You are pregnant (postpartum)
You are over 30 or under 40. It may occur at any age though)
You are a woman (I've heard 3:1 and 7:1)
You are related to anyone who has Graves' disease or other hyperthyroidism
You are Japanese (probably diet related)
You eat food or supplements that are high in iodine.
You take iodine supplements because of an iodine deficiency
See your doctor if you believe you have hyperthyroidism or if you are at risk of getting it. They can help you reduce your risks or treat your condition.
