No. The underlying principle behind the Electoral College is prevent mob rule. The founding fathers realized how quickly the new democracy could crumble into anarchy without an independent and unbiased system put into place and like it or not, the College helps keep the US from dissolving into civil war every four years.
As romanticized and attractive as it sounds, the idea of election by popular vote only will not work for a nation this size. Every dissenting faction would file a lawsuit contending the ballots were counted incorrectly, the ovals weren't clearly marked, etc, etc, etc,. Look at the contention at the last presidential election.
Whether we agree with the current system or not, it has kept the country from dissoving into chaos and anarchy for over two hundred years. I don't see how disbanding the Electoral College can do anything more than divide the country further. I think we have quite enough partisanship now without stirring up the mix.
