It's not a question of "should" they help fund election campaigns, it's more like "are they willing to" help fund election campaigns.
If the US government, especially concerning the parties, wants to help fund a certain candidate's campaign, that's perfectly legitimate.
Often times, the candidate running will gain so much money from other ways, whether it be fund raising or donations, that no one really keeps track of where the money is coming from, anyway.
In other words, it's perfectly legal for the government to give money towards elections, but I would think it would be more of a moral issue. The money going towards campaigns could be spent in much better ways, according to some, especially when, as already stated, candidates receive money in many other ways.
If the government does support political campaigns, it is just proving to the American people that money can buy success - which is not a good role model, but, in many cases, may be just the cold, hard truth.
