Will their be people that are blind to political issues and look only at a person's faith as qualification to lead this country? Sadly, the answer is yes. Some will be blinded by their own prejudice. There will be voters who would not vote for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. Along that same vein of thought though, there will also be voters that will not vote for Hilary Clinton because she is a woman (I choose not to vote for her because I think she is crazy)and voters that will not vote for Barack Obama because he is black. It is offensive that people will be so critical, but it is an aspect of politics and campaigning that must be taken in to consideration.
Having said that, do I think it will prevent Mitt Romney from being elected? Absolutely not. Romney is quite a polished politician. He is well spoken. He is a man of faith with tremendous family values and respect for the rights of the individual. I believe he sees a bigger picture. Opinions will change about this man and about his faith as he continues campaigning.
I choose to have faith in the American people... faith in the ability of the people to choose the best man for the job, regardless of religious preference. To not elect a man based on his religion goes against every freedom and right that this country holds sacred. We would be moving backwards as a nation to submit to such prejudice. I think we are better than that. Will a Mormon be elected president? It's too early in the campaign to make such a call. But CAN a Mormon be elected president? Absolutely.
