Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel, born March 18th 1858, died September 30th 1913, was a German inventor, who was famous for his invention the diesel engine.
He was born in Paris, France and his parents were Bavarian immigrants.
He studied engineering at the Munich Polytechnic. After he graduated he spent two years as a machinist and designer in Winterthur, Switzerland. He then returned to Paris and worked as a refrigerator engineer for Linde Refrigeration Enterprises, where he designed many heat engines, including a solar-powered heat engine.
His research into fuel efficiency led him to build a steam engine using ammonia vapor. While he was testing his work he had a near-fatal accident, hospitalizing him and causing ill-health and eye sight problems in his later-life.
He was also a connoisseur of fine art and an internationalist.
In 1883 he married and had three children.
In 1885 he set up his first shop laboratory and started full-time work on his engine. This continued after he moved to Berlin, Germany, where he worked for Linde Enterprises.
Rudolf Deisel was best known for his pressure-ignited heat engine. He was also a well-respected thermal engineer and social theorist.
