As the 2008 election nears more Republicans are abandoning their support for the Iraq war. Bush isn't up for election, the Republican leaders are. They have to consider their own races and they can't afford to waiting out the present policy because a vast majority of their constituents want the US to get out of Iraq. Bush's approval rating is now in the twenties. Supporting him now would be political suicide.
Further evidence of with drawling support of the war by Republicans in the Senate is occurring this week. Senator Richard Lugar, the senior Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee is calling for a sizable reduction in troops. He's considering legislative measures this summer if the administration is unresponsive to his position. Other prominent Republicans including senators Voinovich and Warner are taking similar positions. This is significant because they're not only prominent Republican members of the Senate but former staunch supporters of the war. Their shift could cause a ripple effect among the entirely Republican caucus.
This isn't only taking place in the Senate but in the House as well. House Republicans are urging a revival of the Iraq Study Group which could have the troops coming home in March 2008.
