Tips for family summer fun

You can see it now...pool parties, the taste of fresh barbecue, extended daylight hours, the smell of fresh cut grass...summer has arrived to fill your senses! But wait...what is that sound? Ah, yes...the children. You didn't forget did you? Remember, school's out for summer vacation. Almost three months of lesson free bliss waiting to be embellished.

Oh no! In all his boredom Johnny has found only one thing to do...torment little sister. Wait a second...who let the dog out this time? You'd better run and catch him before he gets ran over! Wheww...that was a close one.

Oh my goodness...my, my goodness. While you were chasing down the dog, little Mollie decided to make herself a snack? There's peanut butter all over the counter..and I don't think she meant to knock the milk out of the fridge either. By the way, the neighbor kids are at the door..Johnny didn't think you'd mind if they stayed over while their mom was out. Oh and Dad just called, he will be in early for lunch today...sorry it must have just slipped my mind.

Ok...seriously speaking, this scenario exemplifies a typical summer day for many families. It doesn't have to be this chaotic. Setting a few simple rules and setting aside times for planned activities with your children can and will help your days to run much smoother and all the while, you and the kids will have a blast. The family vacation is usually the highlight of everyone's summer, but it will only last a short time. Make plans to implement responsible behavior while realizing that play time is imperative.

First, assign chores. Why? Ok, three reasons. 1) Kids need to learn how to be responsible, 2)They will be more aware of how much work goes into running the household, they will be much more appreciative and respectful and 3)it helps pass the time for them.

Next, set aside special times for fun activities and schedule weekly events. For example, let it be known that each day, at a previously specified time, you and they will stop all other activity in order to play some games. Take weekly trips to the public pool or go to the park. This gives the children something special to look forward to each and every day while offering some form of structure.

Summer time is a special time. While we all know how hectic and stressful it can be, never forget to cherish these moments. Before too long, you'll wish you could turn back the clock.
