Youtube is unlike any other site. It's a gateway to 100% creativity and freedom. People have become "Stars" on Youtube, where as they wouldn't have even been thought of outside. People are always going to be on the Internet, it's a fact. Why not make a statement, comment, or comedy while you're at it? Youtube is the definitive answer to this question. Unlike other video based sites, Youtube has been marketed extremely well. It's more than just an over populated, teen based video chat room. People can express themselves clearly. Not to mention, the site itself is well kept, and the idea of keeping copy written material off gives the admins a daunting goal. However, Youtube's greatest asset is also it's greatest weakness. People know "Youtube", it's became a Internet name. As common as Amazon, E-Bay, and AOL. However, the idea of uploading videos online is not limited to Youtube alone. Ebaumsworld, Veoh, E-Videoshare, and Break are just a few of the other "forgotten" sites.
The idea of Youtube controlling the video uploading market is either sucking users who would be uploading videos on other sites to travel to Youtube, or lowering the amount of traffic and revenue other sites would be gaining from ad placement. However, Youtube isn't a monopoly in the true sense of the word. The modern idea of monopolization is based on revenue and income, since Youtube doesn't charge for uploading videos, the definition doesn't accurately fit into play. However, is Youtube ever started charging, then things could get interesting. People aren't going to leave, Youtube is such a large community, why risk the chance of losing potential viewers? Say, Youtube could have a special "for $5.00, You're video would be on the main page for 3 hours". It's not mandatory, however, it's potential revenue.
However, in the grand scheme of things that exist on the Internet, Youtube is still a baby. It still has a lot of growing to do, and the future is bright for it. People will still continue to upload videos, ever expanding it's servers. I see in the future, Youtube will be expanding to other aspects of media, not just videos. "Youclick" for Photo uploading, "Yousing" for on-line song posting, and even "Youwrite" the on-line article site. But it would have to compete with Helium on that one :-p
