Animal dissection and study is an integral part of learning the biologic make up of animals, which translates into helping understand human anatomy as well, benefiting the scientific and medical community helping them develop lifesaving drugs and medical procedures.

With that being said...

There should be no ban imposed upon animal dissection in high school, a a set. There is little to gain of dissecting earthworms, starfish and frogs at the high school level, that could not be gained from watching a video and drawing a full diagram of the animals body systems.

First is considering that maybe 1 of 100 students will ever be needing to dissect an animal and be familiar with it on such a concrete level, making it is a waste of time to put everyone else through such an ordeal.

Also the cost of supplies, such as scalpels, tongs, pins, dissection trays, lab coats, goggles gloves, and the specie itself, you will have at least $50 dollars wrapped up per person per experiment. The money can be allocated to other more beneficial uses in the classroom.

While I believe it is pointless to practice dissection in high school or junior high, it should not be banned on the college level, where it is best suited to those students that will make the best use of it.
