Who says that buying a car isn't difficult for women? Buying a car is without a doubt one of the most complex purchases we ever have to make. I recently discovered this first hand about a month ago when I decided to get a vehicle financed by myself. The many challenges women face when purchasing the perfect vehicle and negotiating car prices can certainly become a hassle if you do not prepare yourself.
1. Do Your Research: Whether you want to purchase an old or new vehicle, it is important to do research on the vehicle you are interested in buying. The Internet is a wonderful tool for conducting this research. It also saves you time from constant trips to the dealership. Make comparisons from the comfort of your home and print out the results. You can still consult the males in your life (spouse, brother, father, friend, etc.), but know what you want regardless of their influences. Some of the questions that are prevalent in any potential consumer's mind is the gas, mileage, the warranty, and the overall price of the car.
Research applies to more than just learning about the vehicles, but the dealerships where the vehicles are being sold. Many people rarely send off for vehicles out of town, so your local dealership is most convenient. There were several promising dealerships in my area, but I was able to check out each of their websites in order to find out about any sales, promotions, and other tidbits that were being offered. I also purchased the car at the end of the month, which is the most opportune time to buy a vehicle. Note: Always test drive the vehicle you are interested in buying.
2. Establish a Limit: After researching the car you are interested in, then it is time to come up with the final details before you set out to make a purchase. Your lifestyle reflects the type of car you want to buy. So the question is: How much can I afford? I'd suggest a definite budget assessment. You do not need to jump into any steep price brackets if you cannot afford to. In my case, I added up the potential car payment, the insurance payment, the gas, and miscellaneous (upkeep) then totaled those numbers. Believe me, that makes a big difference because most people tend to spend and spend without having at least an estimate of their expenses. Knowing what I can afford really puts things in perspective and you will be more likely to be lured to spend more than you earn.
3. Be a Good Negotiator: We have all seen the car salesman skits and trust me, this is not a cliche. Salesmen are just as sneaky, and manipulative as they are portrayed to be. Do they see a woman as an easy mark? You betcha. As a business major, I can readily accept their sales/marketing skills and the reasons behind their actions. As a buyer who wants the best deal posssible, I have a harder time with their pitch. My advice is..beware. You may go in with full confidence, and leave out the dealership with an 08 vehicle and a $500/month car payment! It happens everyday. Ladies, cut to the point and do not be persuaded by the various features or brand names or colors. Show that you are knowledgeable about the product and show no signs of intimidation.Flaunting only works well in the movies. If the salesman detects an inch of weakness, they know that the sale they are really pushing for can be completed. Having a fellow with you to check out the mechanical part of the deal will help in deciding if the car is worth its valued price.
Should there be a buyers guide somewhere in paperback for women? Definitely. Will buying a vehicle be any easier? Follow these steps and it certainly can be.
