Movie reviews: SiCKO (2007)

I just returned from a showing of SiCKO, Michael Moore's newest film, chanting PEOPLE BEFORE PROFITS, loudly and with verve, in my own head ... again shocked at the things that can happen in MY country ... land that I love (cue rockets and bombs a bursting in red glare). The film ended and the theater, filled predominantly with ~40 folks with grayer hair than my own, erupted in applause. Not wild mind you, but a very respectful round.

As I walked out the EXIT and back into the sunshine, a man who had been seated in front of me stopped me on the sidewalk with, "So what do ya thinka of that?" He and his wife and I stood together for a few minutes, taken back by what we'd just shared together, and wondered aloud why the opportunity for health and happiness (which go hand in hand) in this country seem to belong ONLY to those who can afford it. We never traded names. Just a wish for good health and a good day as we kindly walked away from each other.

Moore made at least three people, and hopefully millions more of our country-persons (?) say, "OK wait. Let me get this right. ... This is MY America? ... Could this possibly be TRUE? ANY of it? In MY America? In this, the greatest and most powerful country of them all? The greatest of all? ... Really. .... Really."

I came away from that theater today thinking that until we actually care for our own, how can we even venture to say that we are the greatest of anything?

What we are is a country at the mercy of the construct of the almighty dollar. Everywhere. Money money money muh-nee MUH_NAY. Controlled by it. Everywhere. Apparently, even down to whether or not we are eligible and approved to have health.

For me? I think its sad when coin is more important than the opportunity to lead a vibrant life. People who are filled with life give back more to the world, no? Why are FREE basic human rights in this country such a subversive, downright laughable, concept? I'm not laughing any more. I appreciate Moore's unique way of rousing We The People, and find it fascinating that such tactics seem to be the most effective ways to get folks in this day/age to even take notice of things.

Whether you love or hate his work, he presents another important film designed to get people thinking. This is his specialty. Documentary? Perhaps not. Propaganda film? Maybe so. But if he's encouraging our country's people to CARE FOR one another as we would our own ... THAT is propaganda that I'm down with.

(... annnd now I'm on a list somewhere ...)

So,
