Young children are instantly drawn to music. Different rhythms are appealing to different children. If you have a young child allow them to listen to a variety of different music. As you vary the music, watch the way they move and respond to it. Children will develop a favorite type of music from the start.
If you are able to, set aside time each day when your child has music to listen to. This is a great alternative to television. It can be background music to enhance play time or slow, calming music at nap time. You can even develop games around music. For example, have your child(ren) dress up in play clothes and talk about what or who they have dressed up like. Then discuss that character and how they might dance to music. Play music and watch them take on the persona of their character. If multiple children are playing this game together they can trade costumes a number of different times. This game allows for movement as well as creativity.
Even if your baby isn't here yet, they can hear music from inside the mother's womb. If the mother-to-be lays down and relaxes they are likely to feel the baby respond to the music they are playing. This can help build a stronger connection between mother and baby. When the baby arrives play some of the same music played when they were still in the womb. It will be as familiar and comforting to them as their mother's voice.
Music is a gift that comes in many forms. This gift is easy to share with children of all ages. Music will help build fluid movement and creative thinking skills that will last a lifetime.
