As someone who struggled with this issue for a while, I am no stranger to this dilemma. Nonetheless, I came across a solution, and it has been confirmed.
I was pre-med (biology) as a college freshman, and I only did that to give my friends and family some bragging rights. Therefore, I became an unclassified student while I was courted by the Psychology department. In my third year, however, I decided to enter into the business school (still unclassified, though) and began taking courses. I took a couple of accounting courses and hated them, so I ditched that idea. Fortunately, I had a management course (crosslisted with a graduate section), and I loved it. I also loved the grad. school format and atmosphere, so I also knew I'd be pursuing an advanced degree. So, I have a B.S.B.A. in management.
Writing is (and has always been) my first love. So, I earned a Master of Arts in English/English Lit., and I taught in the English Dept. at a community college for the past two years; even on my bad days, I loved it. Basically, after years of being told to pursue a career that I would love doing-especially if money wasn't an issue, and writing/facilitating writing is what I love.
Be true to yourself, and go with your first love. It will save you a lot of trouble. By the way, when you follow your true path in life, the money ALWAYS comes.
