Republican leaders are not pulling away their support of the War in Iraq, they are pulling their backing from "nation building". Any definable enemy in Iraq was defeated long ago, the presence of American troops there today is because of the inability of Iraq to unite as a country to move ahead without their former tyrant.
The quagmire remaining in Iraq is unacceptable to republican, and democratic leaders today. Republican leaders today are uniting in support of forcing Iraq to become accountable in their future security. Their former support of action in Iraq has not essentially changed, but today is today. Iraq's neighbors need to be held accountable for securing the region, not the U. S. military.
Middle eastern nations must now step up and confront radical terrorists. At the risk of sounding arrogant, the United States can survive without imported oil if it must. The rationing would be terribly painful, making memories of the war effort during World War II seem like a pleasant dream. If necessary, the same type of sacrifice of some of our luxuries might come to pass if the "oil sheiks" don't wake up to the reality that the day will come when they have to "pony-up".
The true patriotic leaders of the United States still defend freedom, and our way of life. Politics may dictate some reposturing, but the leaders of America still believe in freedom, and the costs that it sometimes entails.
