Close collaboration between you as the client and a good architect is the real secret to great design. The right chemistry can put you into a new home that will not only live up to your dreams, but delight you in ways you haven't begun to imagine.
The best architects ask the right questions, pay close attention to your answers, and know how to use those questions and answers for your benefit. Your architect will be your confidant and advisor, a problem solver, a manager, an advocate, and a professional who understands that designing your home is not a one person show. Trust and a close working relationship are the keys to success.
Selecting an architect can be a bit like a courtship. Compatibility isn't optional, it's essential, especially when you realize how much of your soul (not to mention dollars) you'll be pouring into your new home. Wouldn't you want "the other half" to share your passion and commitment?
How do you find a good match? The American Institute of Architects (AIA), has a handy "architect finder" on their web site (www.aia.org) that will give you a list of qualified, licensed architects in your area. Since each state regulates and licenses the practice of architecture within their jurisdiction, and a current architectural license is an AIA membership requirement, you can be sure that you'll be choosing from a list of qualified professionals.
The AIA finder gives you contact information for all listed architects, including direct links to architects who have a web presence. If an architect has a web site, take advantage and have a look. Call the architects on your list and chat awhile. It's surprising how much you can discover about a person from a single phone call. Have any of your friends used an architect or know a good one? Use your network and ask around. Maybe you've seen a home or other building you've admired. Find out who designed it and talk with the architect.
An architect's clients are another great resource. Who doesn't love to brag about their new home? When you ask the architects on your list for proposals and samples of their work, be sure they include client references. Arrange to visit and ask clients to share their experiences. How do they like their new home? Was the architect easy to work with? Was he or she responsive? Did the architect deliver as promised and on time? How about budgets, construction costs and the architects fees? Most importantly, would they choose the same architect again?
Don't overlook local contractors.
