When involving your children in vacation planning, first of all keep their ages and maturity level in mind. While young children may not have a concept of budgeting and distance, don't necessarily count them out. Even a five year old has likes and dislikes, and can look at pictures of different types of activities.
For example if your young ones dislike water, you don't want to force them to go on a water ride at an amusement park, or take them to a beach with nothing else to do. If you know they like animals, you could for example incorporate a trip to the zoo in your activities. Never discount or underestimate the impact you have, I am amazed at how far back my daughter remembers!
If you have teenagers, they could be involved even in the budget discussion which is of course a must for vacation planning. It is healthy for them to find out how much things cost and what limits are. Not only will it make them feel good about being involved, they will also learn important life and parenting skills for the future. You may be tentative about finding out where they would want to go let's face it they have more energy then their parents in general! But, you might be pleasantly surprised. If they suggest options that would not be realistic/feasible for everyone involved, always explain the reasons why.
For children ages in-between, maybe you could have them choose from three or four pre-selected options. Don't just blurt out: "Where do you want to go?" This can lead to trouble, especially if you have several children that are close together in age, as they all probably have very different concepts. You can use visual aids like brochures or magazines, to help explain each alternative.
The planning stage can be fun too, and set the stage for a rewarding and enjoyable family vacation.
