This debate question is loaded as if written by a hard-line Democrat. Everyone in America knows the war in Iraq has become a no-win stalemate. When the war was launched, virtually every American, including members of Congress from both sides, enthusiastically approved of it. The fury of America, which proved later to be misguided, was a genuine feeling of a people who had been attacked without warning by murderous Middle East terrorists. It was Pearl Harbor all over again.
The attitude then was a warlike, shoot 'em all and then sort out the guilty ones. At the time, Iraq served as a worthy candidate for revenge. It was run by a vicious dictator who was threatening to use his nuclear and biological weapons on America. Saddam Hussein was rattling his sword, so we went in and took it away from him. Then, the real bad guys used the invasion as provocation to rile up all the radical Muslims in the area to kill the invaders. That's where we are now. In a total mess.
There are very few politicians today who are for continuing the war. They've come to realize that, like Vietnam and Korea, no one can win any war anywhere any more. With the 2008 elections approaching, the politicians are struggling to spout noble sayings that will show their opposition to the war, while at the same time not antagonize enough of their voters to kick them out of office.
We can only wait and watch to see how the Republicans will attempt to pull themselves out of this quicksand of a war. But, make no mistake about it. There is little or no support for the President from members of his own party, and if they don't act decisively now, the Republicans' worst fears of going into election year with the war still dragging on may become a reality.
