Before the Burning Crusade, gold was a scarce commodity. Now... not so much. While it may be more difficult to get gold in the Old World, you will also need less. When you need 5000g to buy an epic flying mount, it will be pouring in.
First things first, then. Set your goal. Why do you want gold, and how much of it do you want?
If you are still leveling in Azeroth (i.e. levels 1-58) you probably have two big goals - buy a mount and get to Outland. You will require about 100g to buy your mount, some gold for training skills every other level, and some extra gold to buy new gear every ten levels or so.
Meeting these modest goals is simple with a few tricks in mind. Before you do anything else, though, make a bank alt. Create a new character, run him to a major city, and park him outside the bank and auction house. For the rest of your WoW career, you will mail anything you want to sell or store to this character. That way you don't have to fly back to a major city every time you want to look in the bank or auction off some goods!
Next, think about your professions. It is kind of intuitive to want to craft things - swords, armor, bags, gadgets. However, from levels 1-69 they are nothing but money sinks. You will spend a lot of money leveling them up, you will not be able to make anything that you couldn't buy, and you won't be able to sell any item for more than the materials themselves are worth. So, choose two gathering professions. One should be skinning; the other could be herbalism or alchemy.
Once you have your gathering professions, and you start adventuring, the second step is to sell almost everything. Take all of your gathered materials, along with cloth and green items, and send them to your bank alt. List them on the auction house at the lowest price, and they will sell. Over time, you will learn what the average sell price should be, so wait until the lowest price listed is at or above the average.
Finally, learn what things people want. There are certain Old World goods that a lot of high level characters want but do not want to spend the time farming for. Usually these are quest items. Lesser Bloodstone Ore (in Arathi Highlands), Giant Eggs (used for the cooking quest), Zesty Clam Meat (also used for the cooking quest), etc, will all sell fairly well. If you are questing in an area that lets you gather these materials, do so.
By cutting your expenses (only taking gathering professions and buying gear only every 5-10 levels) and selling everything that
