Nursing is probably one of the most respectable jobs there is today. Apart from doctors or other medical practitioners, nurses are seemingly the assistants to aid the professional physician in the assistance to administer certain treatments to the patients. Although such job seems commendable, it does have some trade-offs like handling difficult patients and so much more.
Nursing line does not offer you a job, which you can go to work at 9 a.m. and knock off punctually at 5 p.m. because it has to be rotated on a variation of stipulated shifts system. This is however applicable to hospital nurse where attention and care is required 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. This profession may not be as rewarding as other profession as there are typically no incentives or commissions apart from shift allowance.
I am rather sure that most nurses pursued their career in this line is due to mainly their aspiration and interest. There are certain traits, which is the most critical attributes that nurses must possessed in order to succeed in this line of work. Well, there four key factors to success in nursing.
1. Personal Mastery
The first and the most critical point I would like to deliberate is personal mastery. Nursing being a rather challenging professions sometimes are required to perform or react and decide in challenging situation where time is a factor. For instance, prior to the doctor's arrival upon activation, nurses sometimes have to take certain measures that are deemed to be the most appropriate like applying first aid or any other relevant medical procedures. It may not as easy as it seems, as it can be rather stressful, as nurses would not want to make mistakes, which would most probably jeopardizing their career.
2. Emotional Resilience
Like most jobs, when a certain personal problems set in, most individuals are unable to concentrate fully on their job. In this case for a nurse, a mistake resulted due to lack of concentration may be dire and serious. It is because nurses generally provide and assist patients to administer medicines and wrong medication could easily caused deterioration in conditions or in some case, death.
3. Integrity and Fairness
Being fair is important; there should not be a double standard treatment to patients due to one reason or another. Integrity is not only important in sector like banking where money is a temptation. In this work environment, patients put their trust in all the medical staffs in the particular hospital would not want to find their properties being misappropriated, would they?
4. Service Excellence
Providing excellent service is not a rare phrase in the current context. This is especially applicable in this field as patients rely and depend on nurses to provide them with utmost care and attention while they are on their way to recover. The extra care and effort rendered will definitely make the patient feels better, which could be the contributing factor in speedy recovering.
With all these critical success factors in place, a rewarding and satisfying career in nursing will ultimately is yours in the near future.
