Of course dueling would benefit society! Not only would it be easy to implement, it would be a system which has as its backbone the concept of fairness. Let me give you an example as to how duelling would work.
John wrongs Jack. Jack goes to the police, who give John two options. Either he submits to a duel or he is charged and brought before the court system. So John agrees to a duel. A time, location and date is established at a dueling centre. Duelers are given a choice of weaponry upon which they must agree. Failing this, they are given the standard issue pistol (or other agreed upon standard weapon). The duel then takes place, monitored by independant adjudicators, and ends when either of the contestants is pronounced dead. If contestandts do not wish to kill each other various other end points can be agreed upon before the duel. No charges or duel challenges could be brought as a result of the outcome of a duel, except in the event of one of the duellers breaking the rules of duelling (as established by relevent legislation).
And there you have it. A satisfying and fair method of retrebution in which the wronged person gets the chance to confront their enemy personally on an even playing field. A modern slant on what was an honourable and effective method of solving a problem between two people.
