The importance of an alternative to oil

annually. This vast amount of energy is more than 23,000 times that used by the human population of this planet."(Robert L. San Martin, "Solar energy", in AccessScience@McGraw-Hill, http://wwwaccessscience.com). In the applications of this energy we find, high-temperature heat used for generating capacity, the harnessing of photosynthesis to produce energy-rich fuels, and photovoltaic cells for direct conversion to electricity. Japan is currently constructing an orbiting solar energy collection platform with which it will seek to transfer electrical energy to Earth via microwave or laser. The first phase of this experiment is due to be launched in 2010.

It is to this diversity, that we must adjust the aim of our search for solutions. We cannot reasonably subdue the free-market and not expect repercussions. Which is to understand also that to sterilize that market to the limitations of existing structures and not to embrace diversification is equally damming. There is an equal and opposite reaction to all our manifestations. Those who are going to conduct themselves in globally ranging arenas should of all of us understand the need to anticipate the ramifications of their actions. Captains of industry must call upon themselves to pursue their own diversity. To belong to an energy interest should involve a structured re-investment in other technologies for delivering similar service. "The best way" must be restructured in our thought process to be understood as not one way but as a culmination of combined and complimentary systems. We as "the people" cannot seek to punish industry, as we are co-conspirators. We can however seek to reinforce with our investments, the successes of those who display the integrity and foresight to diversify their technologies in a fiscally and socially responsible manner. What absolutely must stop is the practice of purchasing competing patents for the sole purpose of silencing those new technologies. It has been said that General Electric executed this very ploy with fluorescent lighting, effectively stalling that particular power saving innovation for several unnecessary years. This type of conduct forces the thinking individual to ask, how much more technological advanced and energy efficient could we be but for these anti-productive, ill-intentioned manipulations?

Investors find strength and assurance in diverse portfolios. Economic markets survive only as a multi-faceted construct of their constituent industries. Corporations
