Upon reading several of the top responses to this debate question, I cannot help but notice that most of the writers aren't speaking from personal experience with a Myspace. I realize that most of the writers on this site aren't teenagers, but as a 16 year-old girl I feel like my insight is more first-hand than most of those writing. I do have a Myspace, and I am very firm in saying that it can be a very safe and enjoyable site for use.
Teenagers are aware of the dangers of putting out information on the web. The site itself is very clear upon making an account about all of the different features that can be used to add security to one's page. There are numerous precautions that a teen can take to ensure only those that they want to see their information can.
In addition, schools and media are also making sure that the message of safe Myspace use is being put forth. Last year at my school the entire student body attended an informational assembly about how to spot shady characters, how much information is safe, and several statistics and percentages about predators and incidents relating to Myspace. Also, several news reports, web articles, and television specials have been made to inform the public about the dangers and how to prevent against it. Due to all of this publication, teens are very aware of the dangers and how therefore know how to be safe.
You also need to take into consideration all of the good that comes of having a Myspace. Through my page I have been able to keep in contact with many friends that live in different areas. I can keep track of family members that don't always have time to call. I can find people in different areas with similar interests and discuss. I can share silly pictures of my friends and I. Most teens, and all of the ones that I know of, do not use Myspace to find men to 'hook up with' that they don't know, they use it as a social outlet for those that are close to them to continue their relationship. It makes teens feel like they have a place where they always have friends when they are away from a school or extra-curricular setting. All of these help teens with their social activity and give them a way to use their creativity.
Speaking as a teen with a Myspace, I can honestly say that I've never felt that I am not safe while using my page. Because of the good it does for teens and the overwhelming evidence that teens do know how to take preventative measures, I do believe it is a safe venue.
