Helping your pet cope with storms and loud noises

The best way to help your pet with storms or loud noises is through desensitizing your pet to the storm or loud noise. This step is very important and does work.

First, get a tape or dvd of a storm or loud noise. It can be bought at any store. There are gun shots, thunder, etc. Play the tape loudly. Everyday increase the volume and keep your pet close to you. You may have to use a leash to ensure that the pet does not wonder away. By listening to the noise your pet will soon realize that he/she is not in danger.

You should keep playing the tape/dvd as long as it may take to condition you pet to the noise/storm. Some pets take longer to train. Have treats available. As you turn up the volume reassure your pet that everything is fine. Give him/her a treat for staying calm. REMEMBER - your stress level can be felt by your pet. You are an example or packleader to him/her.

If this method does not work, your pet may need to see a vet. Have a medical workup done to eliminate anything that may be medically wrong with your pet. If nothing is medically wrong a small tranquilizer may be given. Only under supervision of your vet should this be done.
