Reflections: Paris Hilton's jail time

The Embarrassment of News Television

America should be ashamed with how much coverage Paris Hilton has received. We are in a war in Iraq which is claiming lives everyday and the lead story is Paris Hilton and her stay in jail. There are much more pressing news stories than her short stay in the county jail. Paris Hilton was arrested for DUI and if it was any other person, they would have done their time and moved on.

Paris Hilton should be embarrassed about her life to date. The problem is America, mostly the entertainment media, classify her as a socialite. The reality is she is a bad image person. Her history shows that other than carrying the Hilton name, she has done very little. The abuse of fame is very evident with her past and the culmination of her stay in jail.

Paris had a chance to receive an upper echelon education at the Dwight School and she dropped out. She did get her GED however. Since then she has tried her talents in television, movies and music. Her show, The Simple Life, has gone from Fox Television to low level cable television. Her music is below average at best and her movie career is bit pieces at most. Her most notorious movie part was when Rick Saloman let the public see their sex tape.

Unfortunately, Paris feels any publicity, good or bad, is still good. She maybe right and this is a shame. Her parents must be embarrassed by all of her actions. Not only besides Paris, there are other celebrities who do not understand how their actions are an embarrassment to America. Lindsay Lohan can not keep herself clean. Britney Spears shaves her head and enters rehab. Three examples of young ladies, who can not get out of their own way.

So what should news television do? They should either not publicize their indiscretions or publicize the embarrassment of their actions. Larry King should have asked questions about why Paris Hilton is doing what she is doing rather than what the food was like in jail. News media outlets should not be devoting time on their shows until it is real news worthy information. Going to jail for DUI is not news worthy.

Where does Paris go from here. She should stop going on news programs and trying to show she is a victim. The American people are the victims. She should do a commercial telling people about DUIs. She should keep a low profile and use her money to do some philanthropic work. She should realize that her previous lifestyle was only going to tarnish her image further. Eventually, the bad publicity will stop becoming publicity at all.
