Using leisure activities for the healing process has been employed since ancient Egyptian times. More recently during the First and Second World Wars, the American Red Cross implemented recreational programs to assist the war veterans. Staff employed for these services could be said to have begun a specialized practice that provided programs for people with disabilities. The most popular programs involved the use of painting and drawing as the main focus of diverting patients to think beyond their pain. (Kraus & Shank, 1989) (Cribb, 1994) (Koop, 1992)
"Art Therapy is a recognized modality in the process of healing. As part of the art therapy process, art materials are used by the participant/s with a trained art therapist present who works to help guide the client in exploring the images that are produced". (arttherapy.org.au)
The term Art Therapy' seems rather simplistic when examining all the ramifications involved in therapy via the arts. Two other names coined for this are Occupational Therapy and Diversional Therapy and while none of the terms encompass all elements of therapy via the arts, each contribute essential elements to the whole principle. These days the art therapies involve the whole person addressing each of the senses, faculties and physical abilities. Thus, not only painting and drawing may be used but also music, writing, photography, sculpture, hand crafts and many more.
Programs are "designed to support, challenge and enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, emotional and physical well being" of each individual (The Diversional Therapy Association of Western Australia Philosophy). The programs are intended to create opportunities where the clients may choose to participate in activities, thereby promoting self esteem, empowerment and personal fulfillment.
Unfortunately, while the art therapies are gaining recognition and validation, many medical institutions do not set aside funding for such programs. "It is up to the patients' family to provide such diversions" was said to me as I approached the local hospital for funding for materials while I was doing a volunteer program. It can be very disheartening for the new practitioner to try to set up programs in the community without funding and acknowledgement of the validity art therapies.
