Evaluating the current reputation of lawyers

Despite the general consensus of 90% of the population of the United States, I believe that most lawyers aren't necessarily bad. Yes, I know that there are some money grubbers and not so other nice names for some of the lawyers out there, but that's true for any profession. I guess lawyers have just predominately gotten a bad rap and slandered stereo type for so long. But why is this?

I guess the fact is that most lawyers may be in it just for the money (and I know it pays well and it is hard work), but I am certain that there are some honest, decent lawyers out there who are passionate about what they do and love their line of work. These people may love to see justice prevail, or maybe they watched Perry Mason as a kid and dreamed of one day standing in front of that Judge and delivering the perfect speech, or finding that last bit of evidence that was completely overlooked but proves the innocence of old Mr. Smith whom the whole town had turned against and who was about to go to the gallows for a crime that he never committed. I admit, even that to me sounds very grand.

But what happened to this great American dream? It used to be that a lawyer was a very noble thing to become. Maybe it is all the defense attorneys that burn my buttons, the ones who will defend even the most guilty thugs and mob bosses, even to the point of getting them off scott free when everyone knows the truth, including the judge. But it all comes down to technicalities, no longer about honesty and integrity and one man's word against another, but rather a game of cat and mouse to see who can find the fastest loop hole and get their client through it before quicksand falls through.

But for all that I know there are still some decent lawyers out there. Ones that loved Perry Mason. Ones that will take a stand against criminals and evil. Ones that won't sacrifice integrity for a quick buck. Ones who are passionate about what they do and strive to see justice done. I pray that these lawyers may prevail and true justice may be done, that integrity may shine forth through these noble men and women. To these lawyers I have much respect and love. Keep up the fight. God bless you.
