Government assistance should be mandatory in funding political campaigns. They should not only help fund campaigns, they should fund the whole campaign. There should be a set fixed amount given to each candidate. Where would this money come from? The money would come from the American people, and this doesn't just mean through taxes. There would be regulated organizations, fund raisers, and donations that would fund political campaigns. Instead of giving money to a single politician; you would give money to a regulated organization that would be in charge of handling the financing of the campaigns.
The government funding campaigns has many advantages. The most important benefit is the elimination of the issues surrounding soft money. The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 puts limits on the acceptance and use of soft money. The issue of campaign finance has become a top issue in the United States. Wealthy investors have been financing campaigns in order to insure their interests are taken care of in Congress. Politicians have been trying to pass legislation and reforms that benefit their investors, not the American citizens. Eliminating wealthy investors puts an end to Politician's making important decisions that affects all Americans based upon who is financing them.
A level playing field for all candidates is another benefit. A majority if candidates come from wealthy backgrounds. Unfortunately, the percentage of Americans who are fortunate enough to have a wealthy economic status is low. This small percentage is the overwhelming majority that is running or government. Every economic background should be active in our government. Government funding campaigns allows a legitimate candidate that comes from a lower economic status to run a campaign. The financial burden will be lifted and a diverse set of candidates will have the opportunity to run for a political position.
Regulated campaigns helps to eliminate corruption in politics. More Americans will be able to actively participate in politics. Government funding campaigns would be positive step in the right direction for the American government.
