With the deaths of Chris Benoit and his family on June 26, many fans found themselves everything from shock to devastation. In subsequent news reports that would follow, the speculation of what really happened also began not long afterwards.
I was also pleased with how WWE had scrapped the initial plans for RAW that night and turn it into a tribute show for Benoit instead; it was the most noble and classiest thing Vince could have done.
Sure, they could have proceeded with the originally planned show, but he decided to do a tribute to a superstar that actually WAS dead. I may not have always liked the things Vince had done over the years, and personally found his own "death" angle beyond tasteless, but doing the tribute instead had appeared to be the right thing. No matter what the circumstances turned out to be, Vince had, for once, put feelings ahead of business, and I admired him for that.
I held up very well watching RAW Monday night until they showed Chris and Eddie at the end, then I lost it. I can't believe after Eddie passed, we would go through this shock and sadness again 19 months later.
It turned out, though, that WWE may have jumped the gun before what really happened came to light.
Then reports on various news sites(both wrestling and general media; even Court TV has had a clips on it)came out Tuesday morning, followed by a press conference that afternoon that it was a murder-suicide; Nancy and Daniel were killed over the weekend and Chris had committed suicide at least a day or so after that. When all this was revealed, all the Benoit-related videos, photos, and merchandise had been removed from the WWE.com site, with the exception of one story.
Other sites that had also carried his merchandise and videos also jumped on the bandwagon when they too had pulled the items from their sites.
On top of that, Vince appeared on ECW on Tuesday night, apologizing for the tribute show. It seems the man that had gotten a three-hour tribute Monday night almost all but ceased to have existed all those years come Tuesday evening.
CrimeLibrary.com reported that once news of the deaths were made public, wrestling fans and armchair detectives have been discussing motives and scenarios on Internet blogs and chat rooms. It has become a hot topic there, as well as many of the news sites, with views coming from both fans and non-fans, opinions good and bad.
I'm still having a difficult time with these revelations; Chris was always painted a family man. But with reports continuing
