Art is a Journey into the Human Soul
Art is about the journey into the human soul. We all have aspects we are unwilling to see in ourselves that others quite readily see much to our chagrin, and it is art that is the most non-threatening avenue to seeing those aspects within us without going mad. However we react to the art we are looking at is a valid experience for us because it is showing us whatever our soul at that moment longs for us to see.
My art explores the different aspects of human nature both in myself and in others and I put pen or pencil to paper whenever I need to sort of decompress and relieve stress. Often times I will draw after doing a workshop because of all of the incredible unused energy that is still flowing through me so I pour it into the art.
The goal of the art is to determine what in fact our journey is. We desire or should desire to explore every possibility of what we are. When we view art we will see aspects of ourselves that we dislike and cause us to feel uncomfortable. Some individuals are shy about nudes, this could be because they have a poor body image or somehow feel that having a body, sexuality or feelings towards theirs and others bodies is wrong in some way. Some religions have taught this and this is false. There is an excellent article at the bottom of this page about love that would be good to read if you feel that there is something wrong with these things.
Often times we want to know how our family or friends think of us because it is natural to wonder how we are viewed by the world. Unfortunately our family and friends want to love us and cause us to feel good about ourselves so they may not always tell us the things about ourselves which we do not want to hear because it is simply too painful. This is where art can minister to us.
When you go to an art show or museum take along a notebook and make a note of different feelings and thoughts that go through your mind while looking at different pieces of art, also record which pieces gave you which feelings. This will help you to work out in the privacy of your home or while speaking to your mentors (honest feedback) what this art has evoked in you and what to do when you realize that you are not exactly what you thought of yourself before you went to the show. If you react angrily to a piece of art ask yourself what you think you are seeing. Ask yourself what you think the artist was trying to imply when they made that piece of art. Do you feel the artist is amoral or bad for making that art? Why? Do you feel bad about yourself, your body or your intentions; do you feel that you are amoral or bad? Why? The answer is usually yes if you have an emotional charge on the piece. You may track yourself and ask yourself why and you will usually come up with the answers.
