The different types of soap opera fans

by Lee Gee

Believe it of not, fans of soap operas can be categorized with different soap fans displaying differing traits and characteristics. Some would name them 'Soap Nuts', but I've resisted that temptation of labeling them so harshly. Soap opera fans generally fall into one of six categories. This is my view on how the categorizations breaks down:

1) Over obsessed fans. Those who watch all soaps religiously, record them all and even watch omnibus episodes knowing they've seen them.

2) Watch them all fans. Those who even watch soaps that they profess to dislike.

3) Loyal fans. Those that stick to specific favorites and never miss them.

4) Casual fans. Those who catch a soap when they can, which will be their favorite.

5) Event fans. Those who only tune in to catch big story lines and go through spells of not missing them for a week or two then their attention to them fades until the next big story.

6) Secret fans. Those who insist they don't like and don't watch soaps but secretly love them. Some will watch with their partner claiming they only watch because they're given no option but to sit through the soaps.

Some of these fans can create serious problems for themselves and their family with arguments being blown out of proportion pertaining to the soaps. It can become a real battle ground, centralized around the remote control, between soaps and sports. This is generally a male(sport) verses female(soaps) fight. Because sport isn't as regular on TV as soap opera are, females tend to think it's their right to watch because they usually do. The male argument is that sports should have priority because they aren't the usual viewing due to them being shown less often and live sport is exactly that, LIVE, whilst the soap opera can be viewed on a number of occasions.

Many a marriage or relationship has been wrecked, broken or split up for less, so make sure you have two TV sets!
