The notion that women may be losing their femininity is as ludicrous as the notion that men may be losing their masculinity. The fact is that women have not changed; we are still feminine. Unfortunately, as we progress in fields which were previously occupied by men only, we are considered less than feminine because we have to be more aggressive to succeed. The female prowess can be intimidating, but only to those men who are insecure with their masculinity.
Femininity and masculinity are cultural terms for females and males. Dictionary.com defines feminine as "having qualities traditionally ascribed to women, as sensitivity or gentleness." On the other hand, masculine is defined as "having qualities traditionally ascribed to men, as strength and boldness." Therefore, if a woman shows strength or boldness in her pursuit of a career or a relationship, she is considered by our culture as being too masculine. Likewise, if a man is too sensitive or gentle, he is considered effeminate and not very masculine. Notice too that the term "traditionally ascribed" is used in both definitions.
Women have struggled for so long to attain equal rights with men and we are making progress. Hopefully, both men and women will strive to retain those intrinsic qualities ascribed to their sex, but not at the expense of equality.
