No, public colleges are still better in terms of honing the educational instinct and feeding the hunger for knowledge of the student and non-student populace alike.
At least on my end.
In the Philippines, we go about this joke, "There are only two universities in the country, UP and Others." UP or the University of the Philippines is a state college funded by the government. If you went to school in UP, you are considered a scholar. A scholar of the people, a scholar of the government because you pay less than those expensive colleges spawning all over the country.
In addition for having a reputation when enrolled in UP, students are accorded the right to freedom of speech and expressions. It is only in UP where you see a bunch of naked guys running around for a cause, yearly. Being in a public college gives you control over your studies, over your life. You go to school not worrying about your tuition fee but instead you worry about other things that matter. Of course when you go to private colleges, you don't worry about your tuition because mom and dad does the worrying part.
In a public university, there is no free ration of books, no spoon feeding and no free Internet connection. With that, students are forced to go libraries and read. Like scholars do. They read. Students who go to public universities doesn't have much money so they don't have the cash to pay someone to write their papers for them; therefore they try their best to come up with every project and assignment on their own.
Also, professors in public colleges have this edge over their counterpart in private colleges. They are showing that their principles can not be bought by money and they are there to impart their knowledge; and this inspires the students. This gives the students hope for a better future; and an objective of being the best that they can be, and living up to their reputation as scholars of the country.
