Causes of hair loss

As i was reading the other reviews i found out that i should write my points and my ideas of hair loss.
Damage by excessive hair treatments such as perms , colours , blowdrying and hair straightening . Many of these techniques and products are much better than years ago , but are still not ideal . As a lady with greying hair who has it regularly coloured at the hairdressers I have seen my hair quality decline . Some of this is due to the different texture of aging hair some is not . Particularly if you over treat your hair ,and do it yourself , you may damage your hair to the extent were it starts to break or fall out .

Medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can cause hair to fall out almost instantaneously . I have a relative who when undertaking her first course of chemotherapy lost her hair like this . 5 years later when she needed chemo again she did not lose any hair this time . Whether some types are worse for hair loss than others I don't know , so it may be worth checking . However if the treatment sorts the cancer out it is a price worth paying . My relatives' hair grew back better than ever and she had a lovely wig in the interim .
Stress and anxiety can cause hair loss . In severe cases alopaecia can cause baldness total or complete . Sometimes this can be reversed but it takes time and can be difficult .
Baldness which many men experience appears to be hereditary or hormonal . Men who have fathers with thinning hair or bald heads tend to go the same way ,sooner or later . Testosterone seems to play a role in men's baldness also . As with men hormones can play a part in female hair loss . Certain conditions plus pregnancy and the menopause can cause temporary or permanent problems .
Poor diet in extreme cases has been known to ruin your hair or even make it fall out . In bygone years when some diets were nutritionally deficient the lack of certain vitamins caused hair loss .
Finally the personal experience - thyroid disorders and their treatments . I had a recurring overactive thyroid gland for many years . Eventually it was diagnosed and I had a course of treatment . The problem reoccurred three times and finally my doctor persuaded me to have the condition treat with radio-active iodine . Within a short time I had an underactive thyroid which will more than likely be forever now . This means I take relatively high doses of Thyroxine daily . I have noticed changes in my hair over the years through the different stages of my illness and various treatments .
If you hair becomes thin or unusually dry , starts falling out or just changes its condition dramatically it is worth having your thyroid function tested . It is a quick and simple blood test and may stop you getting other more worrying symptoms . After my experiences I have suggested this to a few people who have discovered an underlying problem . One lady I worked with had such thin hair and bald patches that the improvements have been remarkable . I know at one stage of my illness I would brush handfuls of my hair out daily .
The best advice is if your hair starts falling out do not panic . If you feel ill also then see a doctor . If you are abusing your hair with dyes and chemicals stop it and consult a hair specialist . In all these cases a visit to a Trichologist , if possible , should help . These hair specialists can check just why you are losing you hair and help rectify the problem
