Ashamed-
Tires burned onto the ground, a car stops in front of me, but I don't jump back. I walk around the car headed to the corner store for ice and cough medicine for my mama. I was only across the street when the cars engine turned off. This man that I normally see mama with on certain nights jumped out of his car and looked in my direction, I picked up the speed of my walking almost running as though he would chase me, because my fourth grade friends at school told me scary stories about him. Instead he laughed and yelled out, "Little Bitch!" He laughed his jolly self to the cellular store.
When I returned back home my mama snatched the cold medicine out of my hands and thanked me and simply rolled her eyes. That meant thank you coming from my mother.
"Ma? What's a bish?"
Her head turned, she looked at me like I slapped her. "Where you hear that word!"
I'm not sure if I would get a whooping with the old leather belt my mama kept in the kitchen. She wanted it to be in reaching distance for what for what she called us, "hell raising" kids. From her bitter face, I learned, 'bitch', wasn't a good word, so I apologized and started towards my room. Half way down the hallway she called me back.
"Get your nap sack and ya little brothers and come back, OK?"
I nodded my head.
After getting our pj's, undies, and toothbrushes my brothers and I went out the door to this strange old ladies house that smelled like mothballs and stale cheese. Our mother lay on the couch as though she was almost dead, I knew she was faking, but I closed the door and lead my brothers to the old ladies place. My little brother started to whine; I couldn't take it, "stop acting like a little bish!" I yelled at him.
"Uwwww I'm tellin' mama!" He said to me pointing.
"Shuddup," I punched him in the shoulder.
I couldn't believe he was so annoying, but that's the way us children are. The front light on the old ladies house was turned off. My little brothers were acting scared to walk up the stairs to the front door. I wanted to show my bravery so I went ahead up the stairs. I looked back, expecting my little brothers to be behind me but they were shaking in their boots. Just before I my fist hit the door the porch light came on and the door slowly creaked open. The old lady gnarled down at me with a piece of tissue stuck in her nose, curlers rolling down her face and sweat dripping from her chin. I grabbed my chest and gasped.
"Get on in hea chile, boys brush your feet off and come on in hea."
"Yes Ma'am!"
