Poetry: Depression

MY PROMISE

Last night I dreamed that I was dead
I dreamed that it was over
There was no torment in my heart
No sorrow lingered there

Last night I dreamed I was at peace
My broken heart was mended
I had no pain to hold me down
No fear to drag me under

But in my everlasting sleep
Where I could grow no older
I chanced to take a final glimpse
And looked over my shoulder

I saw you there still living on

With grief, your constant ally
The weight of anguish held you down
And there was anger in your eyes

I saw the sadness in your heart
The shadow of despair
Magnified and so much more
Than I ever had to bear

Last night I dreamed that I was dead
How easily it came
But my release had broken you
And I was torn with shame

I reached for you, to hold your hand
I shouted out your name
I tried to take you in my arms
To hold you once again

You couldn't hear me, couldn't see
I couldn't ease your pain
I couldn't make it better
Make the heartache go away

Last night I dreamed of heaven
But it soon became my hell
When I saw how I had left you
With the burden of betrayal

Last night I saw that my way out
Would open other doors
And the end to all my suffering
Would be the start of yours

So here I make my promise
My solemn vow to you
I'll never take the easy way
I'll never choose to go

I'll never take the selfish route
To die by my own hand
But stay and try to make things right
And love you all I can

When things get hard and darkness calls
I won't give up the fight
But hold your hand and make you safe
And keep you in the light
