The state of Tennessee has recently passed legislation to pave the way for toll roads in the state. This weighs heavily on my mind, which may be because my husband and I are truck drivers. We own our truck and all the expenses are our responsibility. Toll roads are not necessary. The money acquired from fuel taxes, etc should fund the roads. If the money is being diverted to other uses, it should be put back. If there is not enough being collected through the taxes, increase the taxes. Then use the money for what it is meant to be used for. If we need more money for schools, raise property taxes.

A toll is just another tax. It equates to double taxation. We should not have to pay a toll on a stretch of road that we are being charged road taxes to drive on, or that we have already paid to build. By road taxes, I am referring to fuel taxes, heavy highway use tax, ad valor em tax in some states, vehicle registration costs, etc.

And after watching what is happening in Indiana and in other countries, with the toll roads they have privatized by leasing them to foreign interests, I am extremely opposed to privatization.
