Explaining the longevity of the Bible

by Joy Elliot

Created on: June 25, 2007

That is an interesting question? Why has the Bible been around so long?

I mean if it has so many errors, why does it remain the world-wide best seller every year?

Does it have magical powers? Do people buy it for sentimental reasons, like...say...because it was important to my family?

Do we give the Bible to families for their newborn infants as some sort of talisman to insure a "good life"? Do we give the Scriptures as a wedding present to the new couple for the same reason?

Well, my parents sure seemed to agree about the importance of the Bible in a person's life. That is an endorsement, if I ever needed one, since my parents rarely agreed. (However, Dad seemed to agree with Mom more often than not,...just to keep Peace.)

I have heard that at times the thing we are discussing is the best commentary on itself. I think that is true,...at least in this case.

A Bible verse in Hebrews really gives us reason to meditate for a little while. Hebrews 4:12 says, "The Word of God is alive/living/lively and powerfully strong/dynamic/dynamite, and has an edge that is sharper/more able to cut/slice than the two-edges of a broadsword with such ability to slice the finest edge that it can show us where our soul ends & our spirit begins, it addresses physical health all the way to where the white blood cells are made in the bone marrow, and it can show us our true intentions at the very core of our being."

Wow! That was a mouthful, but if you were reared by parents who believed the Bible from "kivver to kivver" (as Dad used to say,) then you know that things, like the last paragraph get into your being and stay with you for life.

Being a strong-willed kid, I didn't always buy into everything my folks tried to teach me,...but...I am starting to do just that.

Why? Because the Bible does seem to have a Life of its Own, and as to it being dynamite...All I can say is that It has "blown me away" more than once when I stumbled across a verse that said the same thing my parents said (all those years ago) about anything I was doing "wrong" at the time.

Can I explain the longevity of the Bible? If you need a lot of historical evidence, then probably not. But if you are willing to allow a couple of examples, then may...BE.

1. The makers of the H.M.S. Titanic said, "Not even God could sink this ship!" Talk about "eating crow!" Even the ship itself had a "sinking feeling" that "put its plans on ice!" However, the Bible is still afloat on the waves of humanity.

2. The British rock group, The Beatles, once said in the early 1960's, "We'll be more famous than Jesus Christ!" Yet, The Beatles no longer tour because their drummer no longer lives, and a group without a drummer...no longer has a beat.

But my faith seems to be getting stronger, even through the act of writing this article.

Great! I am convinced! If the Rock of Ages is still rocking and The Beatles have no beat, then I can build my faith securely on the Rock!

After all, that famous band...is now...just...The Less!

Sorry, but "Game! Set! Match! The victory goes to the LORD!"
