She showed flashes of promise as a character, but they did nothing with her. The king and his henchman were interesting, but they didn't do anything but stand around and look menacing for the most part. Again, I saw potential in Eragon's friend (the cute guy from Four Brothers), but the greasy wig was bad and he never got to do much.
Good Things:
- Saphira (the dragon) as a baby was ADORABLE. I dare you to not want a dozen of your very own. And while the human-ish face isn't my favorite look for dragons, the animation on her was also lovely.
- That carries into the rest of the effects. Some things were a bit shakier, but for the most part I thought it looked really good. The movie had a great sense of style visually that I wish had carried over into other aspects of the film.
- Mostly good acting. The guy playing the Varta king was awful. No, not stoic and tribal - wooden and lame. He could take some lessons from Teal'c on Stargate SG-1 about how to be stoic, dignified and still have a personality. It would've helped. Eragon was pretty-boyish and a competent actor. Nothing amazing but fine. Jeremy Irons was wonderful and seemed to really relish his role, which made it that much more fun. I would've loved to have more of him in the flick. The girlfriend... not bad but not amazing. Passable. Robert Carlyle as the creepy shade was fun since I've mostly seem him in more comedic roles. John Malcovich is evil, so him playing the evil king just made sense - excellent work though he didn't get much to do.
General Comments:
Mostly I think I'm just disappointed. I was seriously jazzed after the trailers. I had been looking forward to this one as a fun fantasy epic, and it just fell short. It wasn't horrible, it just had a lot of potential it never lived up to. If they continue with the other books, they need to get a better director for their own sake. It could save the franchise and make it something worthwhile. But really? I'd rather see another chapter of Chronicles of Narnia. They were actually trying.
Eragon isn't without merit (mostly Jeremy Irons), but renting it as cheaply as possible will be more worth your money than it was seeing it in the theater.
