A layoff can be like a kick in the stomach that deflates your ego like a stuck balloon. One minute you're a valued member of the team, then your boss hands you "the letter" and you're suddenly unemployed, shocked, and more than a little angry. There's nothing wrong with you - don't even think that way. You might even be a "victim," but thinking like one doesn't help and won't change things anyway.
Instead, imagine all the possibilities that just opened up for you. Getting that layoff notice may just be the best career move ever. Maybe you didn't like your job, but never thought you could afford to quit, or you simply stuck around because it was easier. That's all done. Put the past behind you where it belongs and focus on your future. Sometimes all we need is a nudge in the right direction.
You might wonder how you'll pay your bills until you get back on your feet. You'll be able to collect unemployment for at least six months and chances are you'll also get some kind of severance package from your employer. I was lucky the first time I was laid off. My wife was working, so we had her income plus full medical benefits. I also borrowed $6,000 from my 401k plan and that helped. Just remember that if you borrow from a 401k you must begin paying back immediately and you have 5 years to do it, but all the interest you pay is to yourself.
It took nearly six months to find a new job, but it was worth the wait. I discovered a dream job that I probably would never have considered had I not been laid off. More challenging, better benefits including a shorter work week and twice the vacation time. Though I didn't think so when it happened, my layoff was the best thing that ever happened to my career.
After nearly eleven years, it happened to me again, another chance to rethink and change the direction of my life. I received a generous severance package that continued my pay and benefits for almost six months. No more excuses. I had always wanted to become a writer, I had the opportunity, I took it and now I am.
What is your secret desire? Was there a career path you always wished you had taken? Think about it for a minute, then take the plunge. Your layoff just might be your opportunity to make the best career move ever.
