Personally, it is rare these days for me to become hooked on a new televison series. This is unfortunate, as it can be a nice relaxing release during the week to have a particular show you enjoy watching.
However, late last year there were two new additions here in Australia which I have quickly come to love as my favourite television series. These were How I Met Your Mother and My Name Is Earl. The two screen back to back here on a Thursday evening and it makes for a nice solid hour of entertainment.
My favourite of the two however, would certainly be How I Met Your Mother. When this show first begun, my partner was on night shift during the week, so he never got to see the first half or more of the series. I would watch it and occasionally tape an episode for him, but he never really got a chance to enjoy it the way I had come to do so each week. After he finished night shift, he accepted that this was a weekly ritual I had now developed and quickly learnt to enjoy it as well. Soon we were watching every week together. Then came the DVD.
I had enjoyed these lovable half hour episodes so much since they started that when I saw the complete series on DVD, I knew it was a must buy item. So I did. That same weekend, my partner and I watched the entire first season over two days. By the middle of that weekend, he was hooked and asking for more. In fact, we were both quite disappointed once we reached the end of the series, knowing we would have to wait until Thursday for the latest episode of the new season.
However now my partner loves How I Met Your Mother just as much as I do and I know he will be eager to watch the entire second season on DVD when the day comes that it is released. It is certainly one of those shows that we can enjoy together, equally. It has elements that are amusing for men and women and characters to appeal to both. The funny thing with this show is that all the men I know, including my partner, would always say 'It's okay' when referring to this show. I think they were scared to admit their love for it because it seemed to be a chick show, focused on relatioships and couples. But once they let themselves go and realise it is great entertainment, all men love this show just as much as us women do!
And what is not to love with the entertaining variety of characters, from the lovable Ted, goofy Marshell and sex-crazed Barney. Then there is Lily, the quirky, fun-loving artist and work-oriented Robin. There is a character that we can all relate to in some way, if not a little bit of each of them at different times. And there are scenarios that we can all certainly say we have experienced.
This show is ideal for watching on your own, with friends, or even with the boyfriend. I have absolutely no complaints and hope that it continues to provide my Thursday night entertainment for a long time to come.
