Oxidative stress and the neuropathies

Quick Summary, Oxidative Stress:
Your body rides an uneasy balance between oxidising (burning) the cells of the food it needs as fuel, and (hopefully!) not oxidising the cells of the body itselfin the process.

Quick summary, neuropathy:
Neuropathy is usually an abbreviation for peripheral neuropathy. PN is a disease of the peripheral nervous system causing pins and needles, numbness, or inappropriate responses to stimuli.

Okay. Oxidative stress can come about for a number of reasons, such as: Body not producing enough antioxidants; Not enough antioxidants in the diet; Other factors affecting cells' abilities to process oxygen and antioxidants such as so-called"cell inflammation."

Of these, the first can come about if one puts on too much weight, as fat tissue does not produce antioxidants but you need extra muscle (and therefore oxygen to fuel them) to carry the weight around. You use more oxygen and fuel but don't have enough antioxidant to protect your cells. For overweight people, losing weight is most important, followed by raising your intake of antioxidant-rich foods and lowering the intake of others.

The second comes about as a result of much of the modern diet. Antioxidants are plentiful in whole foods (i.e. minimally processed or unprocessed foods) but many of the richest sources are also boring "old school" foods. Nuh-uh! The lettuce in a burger is NOT enough! Radical changes of diet are needed. Look at it this way - it's survival of the fittest, even now. Those who are fit and can find and make time for preparing good wholefood meals will survive, those who live on processed food will live and barely survive but who calls diabetes a living?

The last is the most insiduous, the nastiest, and the hardest to spot. Consider for a moment an area of skin such as the back of your hand. Generally, it is sensitive to the lightest touch, right? Now apply some menthol-based sports balm and rub it in, let it really start to burn, then test the sensitivity again. All over the place, some light touches will HURT! and some heavier touches may get missed among the background "noise" of the burning.

That is what cell inflammation does. Certain things cause your cells to start experiencing this "background noise" of inflammation, and then they are not as efficient at producing, extracting, or using antioxidants. They are less inclined to reproduce cleanly, which can lead to dysplasia and possibly even cancers. And they are less
