memories for many.
ELVIS PRESLEY
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Elvis was not a fave of mine when I was young. For my generation he was too straight and part of the establishment, by the time I was in my teens. However with time I have begun to appreciate just what a performer he was. In his young days Elvis was a trend setter and a musician of the young. He was a great looking young guy and had a beautiful voice. No matter what you feel about Elvis there is no denying the man's place in musical history.
PINK FLOYD
^^^^^^^^^^^^
As the premier psychedelic band of the 60's Pink Floyd have a special place in this top ten. They moved with the times and were recording best selling albums constantly. There were some early band changes when Syd Barrett disappeared from the scene and Floyd changed tack slightly. This band continues to impress and influence a new generation of fans.
THE SEX PISTOLS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What? I hear you say. For many this band had little talent . However they were an entirely new experience much needed by the youth of the day. Each generation needs it's own style and music to shock the oldies. For the kids of a couple of years at the end of the 1970's the Sex pistols fulfilled this function. The music was raw and rowdy. When their rendition of 'God Save The Queen' was banned from many radio stations it's commercialism was guaranteed.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
T he Boss is another 'one of a kind' His originality, enthusiasm and great performances took over where others had left off. Over the years both he and his music have matured well.
LUCIANO PAVAROTTI
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Pav arotti must have one of the greatest opera voices ever. His reputation benefited from the popularisation of opera which seemed to occur a few years ago. His warm, mellow and classic tone of singing is recognizable by even the untrained ear. He has certainly returned opera to the masses and must surely have a place in history .
THE BEACH BOYS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Despite being classed as naff at certain stages of their career this group, quite rightly, now has a place in history. From sweet young men with tuneful voices they went on to suffer many personal hardships. They epitomised the surfing days of sixties America and it's music. Their songs have become memorable to successive generations and have a feel good factor. Their music is upbeat, happy, uplifting and is sure to make you think of summer and smile.
Well there you have it and I'm sure that many of you will disagree, so I wait with bated breath to read your article. There were many others such as John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Led Zepplin, Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, Howling Wolf and Woody Guthrie. I am sure you can see why I picked ten as I would have found it impossible to decide on one. However as I only allowed myself ten I tried to include only who I feel are the very best. All my inclusions are or were extra special both musically and as personalities. God bless 'em all.
