Remember those taffy apples we used to get at school? Well the fumes from those peanuts can send a kid to the hospital today. School must bar anyone from bringing peanut products to school to protect those allergic kids. There are many ways a tree nut product can make an allergic kid sick. They can be touched, the fumes inhaled, or ingested.
Touch
There are children who can have a serious allergic reaction if they simply touch a tree nut shell. Some kids can't even touch an acorn when they are outside on a nature walk.
Inhalation
In addition to the taffy apple example, this could happen if anyone opened a bag of nuts or was using peanut butter across the room. This can put a child with a severe tree nut allergy in shock.
Ingestion
This can happen if a child unknowingly eats a sandwich or cookie that contains peanuts or other tree nuts. They can even have a reaction if they drink from a friend's straw if that friend is eating something containing nuts.
In sum, there are so many ways a child with an allergy to tree nuts can become sick, peanut products must be banned in schools. For example, eating in the lunchroom, touching a shell in the art room, on field trips, and in other classrooms are all areas that tree nut products could cause a child illness or even death. This is a no brainer for schools.
