gather resources, construct buildings and then train troops and use them to destroy your opponent, they will attempt to do the same to you. RTS's are more about strategy than action and after beating the campaign (aka single player) you will spend most of your time playing online against human opponents. RTS's work best with a mouse or keyboard and as such are most of them are on PC (computers).

Some popular RTS's at the moment are Supreme Commander, Command and Conquer 3 Tiberuim Wars and Age of Empires 3.

Racing

Racing means just that racing, you choose a car and then race your opponents to the finish in a variety of modes, there are some variations though, sometimes a racer will involve using weapons which you pick up off the track to slow down or destroy your opponent, sometimes you will be able to buy and modify cars to race with in stead of pre-built ones. Racers usually have singleplayer modes like Arcade mode (race for fun), career mode (play through challenges to advance a plot and earn money) and time attack (race against the clock). There is also multilayer which is always fun as well. Racing games appear on many consoles but they are most common on the consoles in stead of the PC Some popular Racing games at the moment are Ridge Racer 7, Gran Turismo 4, Gotham Racing 3 and of course the Mario Kart Series

Action

Action is also known as TPS or Third Person Shooter, this means you view the world from behind the character giving you a better view of your surroundings. Action games come in so many forms that there almost two many to mention, usaully they are pretty similar to FPS's except of course you play behind the character, with you moving through levels blasting anything which gets in your way, they can also be in a medieval setting where you have swords and knives and perform combos by pressing certain buttons. In general Action games are very varied and come in many forms form platformers to mech shooters to Hack and Slashers. Action games are more numerous on the consoles than the PC and handhelds but they appear on all platforms. Some poulaour Action games at the moment is the Ratchet and Clank series, Crackdown, Twilight Princess and Gears of War.

So there you have it, the 5 main genres of Vidoegames. Of course there are other sub genres but just about any games will fit into one of these categories.
