Commentary: Breed specific legislation (BSL)

It is hard to determine what "dangerous breed" can mean. A lovable poodle could take a nip at you just as quick as a pit bull could lick you to death. A breed does not determine a dog's character. Rather the relationship between pet and owner could determine how that animal may behave.

If a pet owner confines their pet to a small area rather than allowing the animal to have human interaction may result in the breed being very overprotective. The breed may also be weary of children and other animals. This may make the dog have an aggressive behavior. You take the same dog and raise it in an environment that allows human and pet interaction along with discipline and that pet may be the most loyal and trusting animal you would ever meet.

With any dog you must show them that you are in control. Reward them for good behavior and correct bad behaviors by providing positive alternatives. Forcing compliance on the pet or punishing in a negative way could cause your pet to be aggressive. To say that ownership of a dangerous breed should not be permitted, you must not only understand that breed but you must also understand the owner of that pet. Seeing as how it would be impossible to judge who should or shouldn't own a dangerous breed then we cannot say that the ownership of one should be banned from all individuals.

It is easy for folks to judge a dog is dangerous by looking at it. My chow and pit bull mix generally causes people to run the other way once they see him. Take the time to get to know him and you would realize that he couldn't harm a fly. Looks can be deceiving and usually are. Sometimes an aggressive dog is one that you would least suspect to be an aggressive type.

You should never assume that all animals are either friendly or aggressive. It's true what they say; Never judge a book by it's cover!
