Album reviews: Five Score and Seven Years Ago, by Relient K

More of what I didn't like on this album came out in this review than what I did like. Not that I didn't like it.
Ps: The title's great. I didn't get it at first.

Track 1.) Pleading the Fifth: Definitely channelling the Beach Boys or something. I really like it though Relient K should do a capella more often. Other than the fact I don't really understand the song something American I presume "pleading the fifth" and all that.

Track 2.) Come Right Out and Say It: Nothing wrong with this song.

Track 3.) I Need You: Nice discordant chords to start it off, that's something new. "I have not been abandoned, no I have not been. Deserted and I have not been forgotten" that part's cool. Chorus could've been cleverer.
First occurrence of "whoa, whoa, whoa" in the background.

Track 4.) The Best Thing: Two words describe it. Sweet. Exuberant.

Track 5.) Forgiven: Nice way of hitting the note "forgiven" in the chorus, it really stuck out in my head. "Don't even blame me foretc." bridge sounded cool.
Use of the word d*. Rather edgy. Not all that offensive.

Track 6.) Must Have Done Something Right: The first line of this is great. Similar vein as track four was Matt Theissen in love or something when he wrote this album?
Of the two, this one is better, though both are nice.
Reminds me of the Sound of Music "Something Good". Lovely.
More "whoa, whoa, whoa". At the end this time.

Track 7.) Give Until There's Nothing Left: At the beginning it felt like he was just singing a paragraph of words to music but then, I felt that way with "Mood Rings" and I like that song.
Chorus' lyrics are kinda weak.
"Something's got to give" clever.

Track 8.) Devastation and Reform: Familiar sounding beginning
Some angry-sounding punk rock back nice.
Not such a fan of computer processed vocals (or whatever you call some of the vocals here).
I always liked the drumming on Relient K.

Track 9.) I'm Taking You With Me: More "whoa, whoa, whoa," at the beginning this time. This must be Relient K's "WHOA" album or something. Definitely Beach Boys.
Of the gushy love songs on this album, I liked this one the least.

Track 10.) Faking My Own Suicide: Great mixing of musical styles at the beginning. It sounds like a country song.
I don't get this song at all, but I really like the sound of it.

Track 11.) Crayons Can Melt On Us For All I Care: Most annoying track EVER. The first time it really shocked me "was that what I thought it was?" Now it's just annoying.

Track 12.) Bite My Tongue: "Too ticked to tock". That's cool.

Track 13.) Up and Up: Reminds me of Shania Twain's "Up, Up, Up" for some reason.
Some more "whoa"s again.

Track 14.) Deathbed: Amazing. Make up for everything else.

Overall impression: rather lightweight. On the other hand, for a long time I wasn't sure if I liked "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right" or "Mmhmmm" best, and now I know I like "Two Lefts" best.

All right, I'll admit the first time I heard this album I hated it. But I like it better every time I listen to it.

Lightweight, but definitely worth it. Much more outspokenly Christian.

Sadly they seem to have lost some of those little clever lyrics that made me love them in the first place. But they'd pretty much lost them by last album anyways. Maybe it's part of being "less corny".
Musically they've improved I feel like they experimented to get just the right mix, and pasted lyrics over top of that.

My score for this album: 9/10 (Extra points for not getting scratched when I dropped it in the snow two days after I bought it).
