Is it possible that some unknown intelligence is behind the mechanics of our universe? Yes, it is. Is it scientific theory? No.

People claim that such an ordered universe could not have come about by pure chance, but I see no factual support to that claim. There is no reason to suppose that the present state of the universe is less probable then some other "less ordered" version.

I have seen Albert Einstein mentioned with regards to his views on the genesis of our universe. True he believed in an intelligent creator, but his famous "god does not play dice" quote comes from another context entirely. It came from his original objections to the emerging theory of the behavior of sub atomic particles - quantum mechanics. His objections are quite understandable - quantum mechanics seems to contradict his own theory of relativity (a contradiction which has yet to be dissolved). He simply could not accept the idea that on the quantum level the universe is governed by probability, a game of chance a roll of dice. He tried hard disprove this idea, but he had not succeeded.

It's not that there is no proof of intelligent design - there is no evidence to suggest it in the first place. Many people seem to think that it is unlikely a universe so "conveniently suited" to our needs has emerged by pure chance, but they are simply looking at the problem from the wrong direction. Humans are not significant in any cosmic way, and the majesty of creation does not revolve around us. That does not negate our achievements in any way - they are significant to Us. The universe was not "created" to support us (or any other form of life). It's just that we could not have evolved in another universe. There is no "great plan", just simple cause and effect.

To sum up, intelligent design may certainly be valid theological, philosophical or metaphysical theory, it is not a scientific one. Though it does not directly contradict scientific fact it is not directly supported by any scientific facts either. It's methods of research (is there such a thing at all?) are not scientific in the least - they are purely philosophical.
