When trying to decide where to purchase a guitar, first you must decide WHAT GUITAR YOU WANT TO BUY!
If you just want a junk, used guitar...just because you want to, I would suggest looking in local newspaper ads, or even better online music shops. However, for a used guitar, I would never pay anything over $100. Simply for the fact that you can buy a begginner guitar, such as Fender or Gibson, with a start up kit for around $200.
If you are looking into getting a new guitar, or just any guitar at all, I would go to three sources: 1.A wholesaler such as Guitar Center, 2.Go on a trusted website, such as musiciansfriend.com, and 3.Go to a guitar manufacturer's website, such as gibson.com or fender.com.
Before going to these places, you should take some time and decide what guitar you want exactly, and do a little research on it. There are plenty of websites that will help give you ratings on guitars, as well as detailed from specs about that specific guitar to previous buyers' comments.
Next step into buying a guitar, try and stick with name brand guitars, like again, Fender or Gisbon. There are PLENTY more name brand guitars...so whatever you do, DO NOT GET A GUITAR FROM QVC, OR ANY FIRST ACT GUITARS! If you invest in these guitars...you have just made a horrible purchase, along with an eyesore of a guitar that will end up in the garbage. Trust me, I know from experience...I have purchased guitars from QVC, because I'm a professional collector and critiqer of guitars...and I thought it would be humurous to try these guitars out. Let's just say that these guitars made great practice for doing the traditional rock bash of the ground! :P
Anyways, once you have made a firm decision on what guitar you want, go to a music store first. Sometimes going to get a guitar for the first time will be quite intimidating, but since you have obviously have researched the guitar you want, just avoid the bullsh*t that the sellers are use to make it seem they are "professionals" when it comes to music. About 90% of these people are full of themselves, so actually take some time to talk to everyone that works at that store...one of them will be really laid back, intellegent...and most likely have a beard. This guy will be the one to get the most honest answers from.
However, if the music store didn't seem to have what you are looking for...then DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THAT STORE! Again, if you make a irrational decision...you will have just made a horrible investment, as well as spending
